Privacy Policy
Effective June 30, 2026
Sediment is built on one promise: no ads, no tracking, no account, no subscription. This page explains what that means for your data — and it's short, because Sediment collects almost nothing.
The short version
- The app runs entirely on your Mac. It never uploads your files, your file names, or your scan results — anywhere.
- No analytics, no telemetry, no advertising identifiers, no third-party trackers.
- No account and no sign-in. You never have to tell us who you are.
- The only time the app contacts our server is the optional license unlock — and even then we see only an anonymous Apple transaction number, never your name, email, Apple ID, or payment details.
The app
When you run a scan, Sediment reads the System Data on your Mac — caches, logs, snapshots, old backups, and so on — to size it and explain it. All of this happens locally. What it finds, the sizes, the file paths, and anything you choose to delete stay on your Mac and are never transmitted to us or to anyone else. Sediment contains no analytics or telemetry of any kind.
A history of what you've reclaimed is kept on your Mac so you can review it later. It never leaves your device, and you can clear it whenever you like.
Unlocking the direct download (optional)
If you buy Sediment on the Mac App Store and want to unlock the direct-download version for free, the app sends Apple's signed proof of purchase — a StoreKit transaction receipt — to our server at sediment.app. We verify it with Apple and store a single value: Apple's original transaction ID, an anonymous number. That lets us hand back the same unlock license if you ask for it again.
We do not receive, and do not store, your name, email address, Apple ID, or any payment or card information. The unlock license is generated on our server and then verified offline by the app, so day-to-day use never requires contacting us.
If you only use the direct-download version, or only the App Store version, this step never runs and the app makes no purchase-related requests to us at all.
Purchases and payments
Purchases are handled by Apple (on the Mac App Store) or by our payment provider (for the direct download). They process your payment under their own privacy policies; we never see your full card or payment details. From a purchase, we receive only what's needed to deliver the app and help you if you write in for support.
Software updates
The direct-download version can check for updates. When it does, it requests an update file from our update host — which, like any web request, reveals your IP address and your app and macOS versions to that host. This is used only to deliver the correct update; it isn't combined with other data or used to identify you. The Mac App Store version is updated by Apple.
The website
This site (sediment.app) is hosted on Cloudflare. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and embeds no third-party trackers or advertising. Our host keeps standard server logs — such as IP addresses and requested URLs — for a short period to operate the site and protect it from abuse, as described in Cloudflare's own privacy policy.
Crash reports
Sediment does not send crash reports automatically. If something goes wrong and you choose to email us a diagnostic, you decide exactly what to send, and we use it only to fix the problem.
What we never collect
No advertising IDs, no location, no contacts, no browsing history, and no behavioral profiling. We never sell or share your data with data brokers — there is nothing to sell.
Children
Sediment is a utility for Mac owners and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Because the app collects so little, we don't expect changes to be frequent.
